Longewala is one of India’s most famous military places and an important part of Jaisalmer tourism. It became well known because of the historic Battle of Longewala during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. This place proudly tells the story of a small group of Indian soldiers who bravely protected the post from a large enemy tank attack.
On the night of 4th December 1971 — just 120 Indian soldiers at this remote desert post faced an invading force of 2,000 Pakistani soldiers with 45 tanks. They had no anti-tank weapons and were completely outnumbered. But they held their position through the entire night — refusing to retreat — until Indian Air Force jets arrived and changed everything. Not a single Pakistani tank crossed the border that night.
The original destroyed Pakistani tanks still sit exactly where they stopped that night. Standing next to them — you feel the immense weight and pride of Indian military history.
